Korean Ruling Party Leader: 'Yoon Suk-yeol Should Be Immediately Suspended from Power'

Published at Dec 06, 2024 11:05 am
South Korean ruling party leader Han Dong-hoon stated on the 6th that it is necessary to quickly suspend Yoon Suk-yeol from executing presidential duties.

The ruling People Power Party held an emergency supreme council meeting at the National Assembly that day. During his speech, Han Dong-hoon expressed that if Yoon Suk-yeol continues to perform his presidential duties, actions like the recent emergency martial law could recur, potentially putting the nation and its citizens in great danger.

Han Dong-hoon said that on the day Yoon Suk-yeol declared martial law, he instructed the military's counterintelligence chief, Yeo In-hyung, to arrest major political figures on the grounds of anti-national forces. Credible evidence has confirmed that the president mobilized intelligence agencies to arrest political figures.

Possibility of a Reversal in the Ruling Party's Stance

On the 5th, the South Korean ruling People Power Party convened a full members' meeting, during which a decision opposing the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol was passed. Public opinion analysis suggests that Han Dong-hoon's remarks indicate a potential reversal in the ruling party's stance on the motion to impeach the president.

On the evening of the 3rd, Yoon Suk-yeol delivered an emergency address at the Yongsan Presidential Office in Seoul, issuing an emergency martial law order, which was lifted 6 hours later. Several opposition parties in South Korea initiated a motion to impeach the president in the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 4th.

Korean media reported that the National Assembly has scheduled a vote on Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment motion for 7 PM on the evening of the 7th (6 PM Malaysia time). However, it is challenging for the opposition to meet the impeachment threshold, as they need to secure at least 8 votes from ruling party members.
