(Myanmar, 21st) Friday (June 19) marked the 81st birthday of former Myanmar State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, and on that day the United Nations Special Envoy for Myanmar, Bishop, called on the Myanmar government to immediately release Aung San Suu Kyi.
According to AFP, Bishop said at an informal meeting of the United Nations General Assembly: "I have repeatedly raised the predicament of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi with authorities in Naypyidaw. She was re-elected in November 2020 but was subjected to severe punitive detention after the military took power."
"For years, there have been no independent or verifiable reports about her situation. Today, on her 81st birthday, I urge everyone to join me in calling for her release."
"In the eyes of many, as long as State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi remains under house arrest, no progress towards peace can be made."
After military leader Min Aung Hlaing assumed the presidency in April this year, Aung San Suu Kyi was placed under house arrest. She had previously been sentenced to over 30 years in prison.
The whereabouts of Aung San Suu Kyi remain unknown. Her son, Kim Aris, has asked Myanmar's military rulers to provide proof that Aung San Suu Kyi is still alive.
