Mandatory Installation of Tracking Devices on Class C Fishing Vessels Sparks Backlash - Tiong King Sing Urges Departments to Dialogue with Striking Fishermen

The government's mandate for Class C trawler fishing vessels to install mobile tracking units (MTUs) has triggered backlash from fishermen. Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato' Sri Tiong King Sing, urged the relevant departments to immediately engage in effective dialogue with fishermen to seek a suitable solution.

Two days ago, over 200 members of the Sarawak Fishing Vessel Association (SFVA) began a one-week strike to protest against what they deem as unfair measures implemented by the Fisheries Department.

Tiong, who is also the Member of Parliament for Bintulu and the assemblyman for Dudong, stated in a press release that this matter could affect the food supply chain and safety in Sarawak. He urged the relevant departments to engage in effective dialogue with the fishermen to prevent the issue from escalating further.

He noted that with the Lunar New Year approaching, the fisheries strike would impact the market supply of fish.

“If the authorities do not swiftly adopt a better solution, a potential shortage of fish supply may force the public to purchase fish at higher prices.”

Tiong mentioned that as of January 2nd, the Fisheries Department no longer approves the renewal of licenses for Class C trawler fishing vessels that have not installed mobile tracking units. If these vessels go out to sea, they would be confiscated.

He pointed out that fishermen in his constituency have repeatedly expressed concerns, viewing the measure as undoubtedly increasing their financial burden.

“The cost of installing the MTU alone exceeds RM 6000, with an additional yearly rental and maintenance fee of RM 2000. Considering their meager earnings, does the government have any plans to alleviate the growing financial pressure on fishermen?”

He added that fishermen also face challenges such as adapting to climate change, coping with minimum wage increases, and enhancing market competitiveness.

He emphasized that Prime Minister Dato' Sri Anwar has affirmed that the government must focus on solving the basic issues faced by the people, and Secretaries-General of all departments must personally visit and listen to public opinion.

“I sincerely hope that the Director of the Fisheries Department and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dato' Sri Mohamad Sabu, can resolve this matter to ensure that fishermen can continue to sustain their livelihoods.”
