Eason Chan Clutches Chest and Dry Heaves Mid-Song, Suspected Somatization of Anxiety Disorder

51-year-old "King of Songs" Eason Chan recently revealed that he has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder and needs medication to keep it under control. On the 8th, while performing in Macau, he suddenly clutched his chest, appeared to be struggling to breathe, and started dry heaving, causing fans to worry and leading to his name trending on Weibo. It is suspected to be a somatization symptom of anxiety disorder. Previously, Chinese actress Zhao Lusi also suffered from somatization due to anxiety disorder, which left her unable to walk or speak.

During Eason Chan's concert on the 8th in Macau, while singing “Seven Hundred Years Later,” he suddenly clutched his chest and dry heaved, his expression filled with pain. He then bent over, but later managed to recover and continued singing. This drew much discussion online, with some saying this was a classic somatization symptom of anxiety disorder. Many fans expressed concern in the comments, saying, “Hope you rest well,” “Your health matters more than meeting you,” and “The episodes are really painful, take care of yourself.”

In fact, in his concert documentary film, Eason revealed that he was suffering from anxiety disorder and needed medication to control it. Photos also surfaced of him lying in a hospital bed with his face covered in bandages, which caused fans to worry even more. He also revealed that he would take a break after the tour, saying, “I have tried stopping the medication, but my body just tells me it won’t work — I can’t control the sudden anxiety. So I decided I’ll only stop the meds after the tour is over.”

It's not just Eason Chan; last year, Zhao Lusi also experienced somatization from anxiety disorder, which left her unable to walk and caused aphasia. Somatization refers to psychological issues manifesting as physical reactions — when certain emotions are excessively suppressed, they ultimately can only be expressed through the body.
