(Malay Aye, 19th) World Breastfeeding Week is an annual event held in August aimed at increasing public awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and related issues.
This year's World Breastfeeding Week theme is “Breastfeeding: A Foundation for Sustainable Life—Strengthening Effective Practices.” The theme emphasizes promoting exclusive and continued breastfeeding to benefit future generations' welfare. The celebration’s goals include raising awareness about the importance of breastfeeding and encouraging exclusive breastfeeding for up to six months.
In addition, it aims to strengthen support for breastfeeding from families, workplaces, and communities, as well as to enhance the knowledge and skills of healthcare professionals in breastfeeding management.
At a World Breastfeeding Week celebration held in the auditorium of Seria Suri Begawan Hospital in Malay Aye, the acting District Chief’s wife, Yuria Abiana, attended as a special guest.
The hospital’s head of obstetrics and gynecology, Roziah, explained in her welcoming speech that in order to ensure breastfeeding proceeds smoothly, we must recognize that every mother's experience is different.
She explained that while some mothers find breastfeeding easy and smooth, others face various challenges, especially in the early postpartum period. Therefore, continuous support is crucial.
“This support comes not only from healthcare personnel but also from husbands, family members, employers, colleagues, communities, and society at large. In particular, the role of fathers should not be underestimated,” she said. She noted that fathers can provide emotional support, help share daily chores, encourage their wives, and foster a positive environment to boost mothers’ confidence in continuing to breastfeed.
The organizing unit arranged a lecture related to the breastfeeding program, a small exhibition, health quizzes, a breastfeeding consultation booth, as well as demonstrations of proper breastfeeding techniques and positions.
