Superstar Jay Chou has recently been fully immersed in the production of his new album, but the process seems to be far from smooth. On the 17th, he posted several Instagram Stories in a row, revealing an unusually irritable tone. Everything from the tangled wires in his recording studio to bad weather preventing him from playing basketball became outlets for his stress. “I think I’ve had enough, perfectionism really drives people crazy!” he bluntly declared, drawing fans’ attention to his creative state.
Jay first shared a photo of a floor strewn with audio cables in his studio, helplessly remarking, “Seeing a bunch of wires on the floor is so annoying. There are dozens of tracks in just one song—who can even tell the difference?” He revealed that even during his time off, he’s still stuck in the nitty-gritty of songwriting and arranging, joking about himself: “Why do I have to be so serious?”
To make matters worse, rainy weather outside meant he couldn’t play basketball to relieve stress, deepening his gloomy mood. He snapped a photo of his pets lounging leisurely at home and sighed that the rain made him recall memories of practicing piano as a child. “When I was little, I’d watch other kids play outside through the window while I was practicing piano—Ms. Lin, come on!” His words carried both resignation and a hint of childhood trauma, as if all his pressure had come flooding back at once.
What really triggered his emotional outburst, however, was the long-stalled progress of his new album. He admitted that his obsession with details over the years has become a source of stress: “Perfectionism really drives people crazy, and I’m not even a perfectionist, just picky.” In order to achieve his ideal for the album, he often dwells on details that outsiders might not even notice, even joking that his insistence “won’t get me a Guinness World Record anyway,” his fatigue evident. He said that going forward, he’ll try to let go of some overly rigid standards and learn to give himself a break: “As long as the music sounds good, right?”
