(Thailand, 16th) A student was punished with a 200-squat penalty by a teacher for late assignment submission. A few days after experiencing severe leg pain, the student noticed the color of his urine turning black and was urgently taken to the hospital for examination, only to be diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis. This condition involves tearing of muscle tissue, with toxins seeping into the bloodstream, causing some level of kidney damage.
According to Thai media Must Share News, a Thai netizen exposed this corporal punishment incident on Facebook, sparking discussion among netizens. The middle school student was subjected to 200 squats simply for submitting an assignment late. After the punishment, the student experienced several consecutive days of severe leg pain and then discovered his urine was black, prompting him to quickly seek medical attention.
Upon diagnosis, doctors identified that the student was suffering from rhabdomyolysis, which is caused by the breakdown products of necrotic skeletal muscle cells, such as myoglobin, entering the bloodstream and harming the kidneys, leading to kidney damage.
The doctors pointed out that fortunately, the student's level of kidney damage is relatively minor and has not resulted in kidney failure, eliminating the need for dialysis while closely monitoring is still required. However, if the condition worsens, blood dialysis may still be necessary.
The involved teacher has currently been suspended from their position, and relevant authorities have initiated an investigation into this corporal punishment case.
