(Bandar Seri Begawan, 18th) The Brunei Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Cultural Society was cordially invited by the renowned educational institution Jerudong International School (JIS) to enter the campus. In coordination with the Chinese Department’s Ms. Wei Daiwei and Ms. Zhang, and under the leadership of President Yang Zhensheng and Vice President Bao Pingsheng, a unique Chinese calligraphy workshop was successfully organized. The event aimed to promote the treasured traditional Chinese culture to the faculty and students of the international school, fostering cross-cultural exchanges and understanding.
The workshop attracted 35 enthusiastic teachers and students from JIS with a keen interest in Chinese culture. Taking into account the diverse backgrounds of the participants, the society specially arranged for the entire workshop to be conducted in English. In a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, the history and profound cultural heritage of Chinese calligraphy were vividly introduced, detailing its evolution from Oracle Bone Script, Seal Script, Clerical Script, Regular Script, Semi-cursive Script, to Cursive Script. The philosophical thoughts and aesthetic appeal embedded in calligraphy were also explained in a simple yet profound manner.
After the theoretical explanation came the much-anticipated practical session. Under the patient guidance of the society’s council members, students eagerly picked up their writing brushes and personally experienced the fundamental techniques of holding the brush, brush movement, inking, and writing. From initial curiosity and attempts to gradually mastering essential skills and becoming immersed in the rhythmic flow of the brush, participants truly felt the unique charm and joy of creativity that Chinese calligraphy offers.
To encourage enthusiastic participation and recognize learning achievements, the workshop included a special exhibition and selection of participants’ works. In the end, 10 participants’ calligraphy stood out and were awarded the “Outstanding Work Award.” Be they naïve and charming or beginning to show proper form, these calligraphy pieces vividly showcased the participants’ understanding of calligraphy art and their strong interest in Chinese culture, earning enthusiastic applause from the audience.
The JIS school representatives spoke highly of the workshop, remarking that it was a valuable cultural experience that significantly enriched the school’s art program and enhanced students’ ability to recognize and appreciate diverse cultures. They expressed hope for more opportunities to collaborate with the Brunei Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Cultural Society in the future.
After the event, the society’s President remarked: “We are very pleased to bring Chinese calligraphy into such an outstanding international school as JIS. Seeing so many teachers and students of diverse cultural backgrounds so engaged in learning and experiencing our traditional culture is truly gratifying. Calligraphy is not only writing, but also a cultivation of the mind and heritage of culture. We hope that through activities like this, we can sow the seeds of passion for Chinese culture in the hearts of Brunei’s young generation and build a bridge of friendship through cultural exchange.”
This successful visit to JIS was yet another important step for the Brunei Chinese Calligraphy and Chinese Painting Cultural Society in actively fulfilling its cultural mission, making a positive contribution to promoting excellent traditional Chinese culture within Brunei’s multicultural context.
