On July 30, Taiwan's Executive Yuan approved the Siraya as the 17th officially recognized indigenous group. On Wednesday, mother and daughter Mai Fang-qi and Shi Ya-xin became the first and second people in Taiwan to complete identity registration as Siraya, witnessed by Tainan Mayor Huang Wei-che at the Southern District Household Registration Office.
From August 13, the 37 district household registration offices in Tainan City have been accepting applications to register on the Siraya member list, and the Tainan City Indigenous Peoples Affairs Commission has completed review of the qualifications for the first batch of cases.
Huang Wei-che stated that, from the relevant decisions of the Constitutional Court to the central government’s completion of institutional measures, the Siraya people have finally seen progress on identity recognition after years of waiting. The Siraya community has long lived in Tainan, preserving and passing down their unique culture. Completing registration is not only about individuals obtaining an identity, but also represents the significant achievement of the Siraya people's long-term efforts to gain official recognition and historical status.
