Petronas Offshore Platform Maintenance Accident: 4 Workers Fall into Sea, 3 Dead, 1 Seriously Injured

(Terengganu, 25th) An accident occurred at the Sepat Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) platform in the Terengganu-Kelantan waters. Four workers were involved in an accident while descending into the sea in an enclosed lifeboat to carry out maintenance under the platform, resulting in three deaths and one serious injury.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Azli pointed out that the accident occurred at about 12:50 p.m. yesterday (24th). At that time, the four victims were believed to be aboard the platform’s lifeboat, preparing to descend to the sea surface to conduct maintenance work below the platform.

He said that the rope connecting the lifeboat is believed to have suddenly detached, causing the lifeboat along with the four men to fall into the sea.

The three deceased were identified as 38-year-old Ahmad Fikri from Bachang, Malacca; 28-year-old Mohamad Fazuan Hakin from Kuantan, Pahang; and 38-year-old Nik Mohamad Hafifi from Indera Mahkota, Pahang.

The injured survivor is 37-year-old Mohamad Taufik from Banting, Selangor, who is currently receiving treatment at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital and remains in critical condition.

Petronas released a statement today, saying the incident resulted in the unfortunate deaths of three contractor employees and one person seriously injured. The company is now coordinating with the relevant enforcement agencies to investigate the cause of the accident.
