(Miri, 25th) Member of Parliament for Miri, Chiew Choon Man, stated that the long queue situation at the Sungai Tujuh Checkpoint today was due to the maintenance of the online Vehicle Monitoring System (VMS).
He said that because the webpage could not be used, Brunei-registered vehicles were unable to register their vehicles through the website before entering Malaysia. Instead, they had to fill out manual forms at the checkpoint counters.
“I would like to thank the authorities at the Sungai Tujuh Checkpoint for taking measures to alleviate traffic congestion. They have instructed drivers of vehicles from Brunei to park their vehicles at the roadside and collect the manual forms at the customs counter. This is to avoid obstructing the passage of Malaysian vehicles. However, due to the large number of visitors today, this process led to long queues because forms need to be collected from the official counters to ensure they are the latest and valid forms.”
He said, in order to immediately resolve this issue, I have contacted the political secretary to the Minister of Finance to help expedite the maintenance process of the online system. This step is very important to prevent such inconvenient situations, especially during festive periods or when there is a large influx of tourists.
I urge all parties to resolve this issue as soon as possible to ensure smooth cross-border travel without interference. I also thank all the tourists and road users affected for their patience. We will continue to monitor this matter and strive to find the best solution that aligns with the welfare of all parties.
