Renowned Hong Kong director Wong Jing launched his YouTube channel "Wong Jing Smiling at the World" to share numerous unknown past stories, this time revealing the past of superstar Andy Lau (Wah Tsai). Wong Jing candidly stated that the Hong Kong entertainment industry in its early days was controlled by the triads. Wah Tsai was also helplessly forced to act in many films, chased to the extent that he had no time to sleep. Once, while filming in New Territories, local gangsters recklessly threw a petrol bomb as a warning to the crew. The next day, the director directly held a machete during filming and told Wah Tsai that if anything happened, everyone would rush out to protect him.
Wong Jing bluntly said, “Andy Lau had acted in many films that nobody really knows what they were about; basically, it was all about fighting.” That time, the film's director was an action star himself. When local gangsters attempted to extort protection money from the crew, the film's producer was actually a triad member who simply wouldn't pay. After one night, the gangsters, failing to get any money, came to make trouble, throwing firebombs and petrol bombs at the filming location.
Although the crew was startled, they all remained incredibly calm, as they had long anticipated trouble. The director even brought a machete the next day to protect Wah Tsai. Wong Jing also shared that Wah Tsai was forced to shoot numerous films back then, but he was extremely resilient, able to shoot two to three sets a day. Each group took about 7 hours to film, leaving no time for sleep. Only when working with Wong Jing would he thoughtfully allow Wah Tsai some sleep time, saying, “When it’s my turn, I’d give him one to two hours of sleep, then try to finish filming within 5 hours.”
