A 22-year-old woman in Singapore suspected she was pregnant out of wedlock, but thought pregnancy checkup fees were too high. She bought abortion pills online and, after taking them, felt abdominal pain. Mistaking it for a bowel movement, she went to the toilet and ended up giving birth there. The baby girl was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead.
According to the Shin Min Daily News report on the 15th, a coroner's inquest was previously conducted to investigate the cause of the baby's death. The incident occurred on the evening of July 15 last year.
According to the findings of the inquest, the baby's mother was 22 at the time and had been dating a boyfriend of the same age. They had sexual intercourse two or three times each month, but did not use condoms every time.
According to the baby's mother, her last menstruation was in April of last year. Afterwards, she told her boyfriend her period had not come and was worried about being pregnant, but at first, her boyfriend didn't take it seriously.
She said that in mid-2023 she bought a pregnancy test kit, but the result was negative. Even so, she suspected she was pregnant due to weight gain, but did not have the courage to test again.
By the end of June, she began inquiring at obstetrics and gynecology clinics to find out about consultation and abortion fees, but thought the costs were too high and did not go ahead. The following month, she found abortion pills online costing 500 Ringgit (about 150 SGD), and decided to give them a try.
At about 1 a.m. on July 15 last year, she followed instructions and took 4 pills first, then another 4 after 6 hours.
After taking the pills, she felt a slight fever and, feeling drowsy, slept until about 4 p.m. When she woke up, she started having period-like cramps. Between about 5:30 to 5:45 p.m., she had abdominal pain and thought she needed to use the toilet. Because the pain was too intense, she finally called her mother for help.
She ultimately gave birth to the baby girl in the toilet. The baby was taken to the hospital but was pronounced dead at 7:24 p.m. at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital.
Since the cause of death was unclear, the coroner ruled the case as undetermined.
