The Chinese palace drama 'Empresses in the Palace,' which aired in 2011 and continues to be frequently rebroadcast, may now face a significant challenge. The actress Cui Manli, who played 'Yu Ying'er' in the series, recently boasted in a live stream about her past incidents of unlicensed drunk driving and hit-and-run, causing many netizens to worry that 'Empresses in the Palace' might be taken down in China.
Cui Manli entered the entertainment industry in 2008 by appearing in the TV series 'Latent.' She became known to the public after playing the role of the ruthless Yu Ying'er (Yu Daying) in 'Empresses in the Palace,' and later starred in several other TV series and movies. Unexpectedly, Cui Manli recently confessed during a live stream about an incident that occurred while filming in Hengdian where she and her friends drank heavily. Since her friend was too drunk to drive, Cui, who was still relatively sober but without a driver's license, took the wheel to drive back to the hotel. While trying to park at the hotel, having never learned to reverse park, she accidentally dented the door of a nearby vehicle and then fled the scene. She later asked the hotel if there were security cameras, and upon learning that the cameras were broken, she exclaimed, "Then I was happy. I thought if the cameras were broken, what was there to be afraid of!" Besides confessing to unlicensed drunk driving and hit-and-run, Cui Manli also revealed that she has driven with an expired license and would feign ignorance if stopped by the police.
Cui Manli's blatant disregard for the law and self-disclosure left netizens shocked, worried that it might affect 'Empresses in the Palace.' Comments emerged such as "Turns out she was playing herself in the series," "Let's hope 'Empresses in the Palace' doesn't get taken down," "Whoever selected her has sharp eyes, she's foolish both on and off-screen," and "Is she planning to quit the circle for a jail meal?"
