(Bandar Seri Begawan, 26th) With overseas travel becoming increasingly common, many travelers enjoy purchasing various goods abroad, whether as souvenirs or for personal use. However, upon returning home, travelers must comply with customs regulations, especially those concerning taxable items.
The Brunei Customs Department reminds that failure to comply with relevant regulations could result in fines at the least and, in more serious cases, legal offenses or even confiscation of goods.
Reportedly, “taxable goods” include certain types of electronic products, some cosmetics, items that exceed value limits, etc. Customs policies vary from country to country, so travelers should familiarize themselves in advance with the latest regulations of their home country before returning, in order to avoid violations.
One of the most important regulations is: each entrant may only bring goods not exceeding a certain value limit. Any excess must be truthfully declared to customs and the corresponding tax paid. Attempting to conceal goods or smuggling constitutes a serious violation and will be dealt with severely. In addition, bringing in goods above the allowed limit without declaring may lead to confiscation and even a negative record that could affect future entries.
“Honest declaration will not bring any loss; instead, it will simplify the clearance process and help avoid unnecessary trouble,” a customs spokesperson pointed out.
The department also calls on the public to have a sense of responsibility and legal awareness. Abiding by national regulations is not only an obligation but also a demonstration of personal integrity and national image.
