A cargo ship flying the Thai flag was attacked by projectiles earlier this month while navigating the Strait of Hormuz. After drifting at sea for several weeks, it eventually ran aground near an island off Iran. Rescue personnel are currently making every effort to locate three missing crew members.
The ship's owner, Precious Shipping Pcl, General Manager Khalid M. Hashim, stated via email on Friday that the "Mayuree Naree" has run aground on an island off Iran.
According to Iranian state media reports, the incident ship ran aground off the coast of Qeshm Island. Additionally, Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson Panidone Pachimsawat cited reports that a joint rescue team from Oman and Iran has arrived on site and is conducting a search for the missing crew members; the status of the crew remains unclear at this time.
It is understood that the cargo ship was attacked on March 11 while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. After the incident, 20 crew members successfully evacuated.
The Thai government has strongly condemned the incident and summoned the Iranian ambassador to Thailand to explain the situation. On March 12, the Thai Foreign Ministry issued a statement expressing deep concern over escalating tensions in the Middle East, pointing out that the related conflict involved attacks by Israel and the United States, which subsequently triggered retaliatory actions by Iran.
The statement warned that continued violent conflict could further exacerbate tensions in the Middle East and beyond.
