(Kuching, 23rd) Starting from 2026, higher education institutions in Sarawak will fully implement a free higher education policy, so that Sarawakians will no longer face financial barriers in their pursuit of academics. This milestone policy is initiated by the Sarawak government, aiming to provide equal educational opportunities for all.
Datuk Wong Hong Sheng, Mayor of Kuching South City, once again reiterated this favorable news at the closing ceremony of the “2025 SPM STAR Workshop” held yesterday (22nd) at the Kuching South City Council Hall.
In his speech, he encouraged the 198 students from 21 schools in Kuching, stating that the SPM exam (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) is a gateway to greater opportunities, and urged them to make self-discipline and perseverance the keys to success.
In his media statement, Wong also praised the students’ devotion to their studies and urged them to fully utilize the opportunities provided by Sarawak’s education policy to create a better future.
This workshop was organized by the Alumni Association of UiTM Student Council, and co-organized by the South City Council, the Sarawak Education Department (JPNS), NEXGEN Petra Jaya, and the South City Children’s Council, with the aim of helping students improve their knowledge, confidence, and motivation so as to stand out in their exams.
He also thanked teachers, parents, and organizers for their contributions in providing guidance and support to students during this key stage of their academic journey.
