Losing Both Parents Followed by Online Bullying: ‘Pearl Harbor’ Star Becomes Skin and Bones

Published at Jan 06, 2026 02:23 pm
opHollywood actress Kate Beckinsale, who rose to fame with the movies ‘Pearl Harbor’ and the ‘Underworld’ series, recently made a rare appearance in tears on social media, directly addressing malicious criticism about her sudden change in appearance and drastic weight loss. She frankly admitted that all of this was not due to so-called “self-discipline” or “intentional dieting,” but rather the profound trauma and grief caused by the successive loss of family members.

In a video posted on social media, Beckinsale choked up as soon as she started speaking: “2025 has been really, really tough.” She paused multiple times to wipe away tears, revealing that just over a year ago, she lost her stepfather, and this year her mother passed away from cancer. She confessed that the consecutive blows of losing loved ones have been nearly unbearable. She said painfully, “Watching those you love endure suffering and death by yourself makes you unable to even feel ‘hunger.’” She emphasized that this wasn’t anorexia or a conscious choice to starve herself, but rather, “It’s as if my whole body has shut down,” candidly describing her condition as a physical aftereffect of shock and trauma.

Previously, Beckinsale had faced a flood of negative comments online for her extreme weight loss. She publicly fought back, calling for people to stop making uninformed accusations. This newly released video is her first time fully revealing the personal tragedy behind the controversy over her appearance. She disclosed that her mother passed after a two-year battle with terminal cancer. She sadly described how she still finds herself wanting to text her mother in the early hours of the morning, only to suddenly realize that her mother will never reply again.

Beckinsale has experienced loss since a young age. Her biological father, actor Richard Beckinsale, died suddenly in 1979 of a congenital heart condition at just 31 years old; she was only five at the time. In interviews, she has admitted that it was “a huge loss that was unbearable for my young self.”

At the end of the video, she expressed sincerely: “After witnessing loved ones suffer and pass away, everyone reacts both physically and mentally in different ways.” She called on the public to respond with understanding rather than judgment, and hoped her sharing would help more people recognize the profound impact of trauma on both mind and body.
