Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin Crowned Blue Dragon King and Queen; Netizens Mock Their Looks as High, Credibility Zero

The 46th Blue Dragon Film Awards concluded on the night of the 19th, with 'The Rebellion' taking home six awards as the biggest winner. The celebrity couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin both took home popularity awards as well as Best Actor and Actress. However, Korean netizens were almost unanimously critical, saying, “The Blue Dragon’s credibility has declined,” “Zero buzz, trying to boost attention with Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin,” and some sarcastically commented, “They're using the couple to win awards, trying to revive a dying film industry,” and, “Everyone that night became the ‘best man and maid of honor’ for the couple.”

Director Park Chan-wook spent 20 years creating 'The Rebellion', which was nominated for the main competition at this year's Venice Film Festival but failed to win any prizes. However, it took home six awards at the Blue Dragon, including Best Film, Director, Actress, and Supporting Actor, making a successful comeback that many deemed well-deserved. Still, the double win for Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin prompted some Korean media and netizens to protest, “It's speechless, this gimmick is just for the couple to attend together,” and, “When did Blue Dragon turn into this—no awards for real acting, only for hype.”

Korean media 'Maeil Economic Daily' pointed out that the most spotlighted moment of the evening was the couple Hyun Bin and Son Ye-jin, whose first appearance attracted everyone's attention. Even though they only won popularity awards at the start, they were still the brightest stars of the night. However, the headline bluntly stated, “Attractive, but difficult to accept.” The report noted that favorites for Best Actor, Park Jung-min from 'Badland Hunters' and Lee Byung-hun from 'The Rebellion', both lost to Hyun Bin for 'Harbin.' Moreover, compared to others, Son Ye-jin, whose role was closer to “supporting,” nevertheless took Best Actress, leaving many puzzled.

Hyun Bin, winning his first Blue Dragon Award, emotionally said, “Through 'Harbin', I learned a lot—not just about the film itself. I believe that our ability to stand on this stage is thanks to the countless people who have dedicated themselves to protecting our country. I want to express my gratitude to them.” He also expressed affection for Son Ye-jin, “I want to say to my wife Ye-jin, who always gives me great strength, and our son—I love you both very much, and I thank you.”
Lee Sung-min and Park Ji-hyun won Best Supporting Actor and Actress.
After 17 years, Son Ye-jin once again claimed the Blue Dragon Best Actress award. Recalling her win for 'My Wife Got Married' in 2008, she reflected, “I was only 27 at the time, and life as an actress wasn’t easy. Now, I’m already over 40.” She also mentioned that marrying and having a child, then returning to acting after seven years in 'The Rebellion,' gave her a lot of pressure. “I’m very grateful to Director Park Chan-wook for shaping this role for me.” In the end, she also didn’t forget to mention her family: “Since getting married and becoming a mother, my way of viewing the world and emotions has changed. I want to be a good adult and a good actress. I want to share this joy with the two men I love most, Kim Tae-pyung (Hyun Bin’s real name) and our son Kim Woo-jin.”
Ahn Bo-hyun and Kim Do-yeon won Best New Actor and Actress.
Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Lee Sung-min of 'The Rebellion' and Park Ji-hyun of 'Looking Glass,' while Best New Actor and Actress went to Ahn Bo-hyun of 'Devil at 2 a.m.' and Kim Do-yeon of 'Monocellular Girl & Campus Ghost Stories.'
