(Bandar Seri Begawan, 28th) The first meeting of Brunei's 22nd Legislative Council recently mentioned that the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC) is exploring a new public transportation model and plans to launch an on-demand responsive bus system. These bus routes do not have fixed lines but are arranged based on passenger demand.

The Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Shamhari, recently responded at the Legislative Council to the latest progress on public bus services and answered questions from Legislative Council member Chong Chin Yee.

The minister also revealed that the tender process (RFP) for public bus services is currently underway, and two companies have already been determined to enter the subsequent negotiation stage.

He said: “We have received some feedback from local sources or the public regarding public bus services, and have discussed with relevant companies. We will contact these individuals at the appropriate time to collect feedback and suggestions.”

He also addressed the issue of Brunei International Airport: “The ministry has considered suggestions on how to use Brunei International Airport to promote local products. Previously, there have been retailers promoting local products, which has received positive responses.”

He added: “If all goes well, we will, based on suggestions in cooperation with the Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB), study how to promote these local products at the airport. We hope to follow up on this matter as soon as possible.”

Regarding airport development issues raised by Legislative Council member Yang Tania, the minister stated that according to the MTIC's strategic plan, the goal is to increase the international airport's passenger and cargo throughput. The target is for the international airport's annual passenger throughput to exceed two million by 2030 and air cargo throughput to reach 38,000 tonnes.

He expressed support for these efforts and noted that His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei has agreed to the establishment of a Civil Aviation Steering Committee (also known as the airline). The committee will be co-chaired by the Minister at the Prime Minister's Office & Second Minister of Finance and Economy and himself, aimed at exploring opportunities for the development of Brunei International Airport, including issues such as corporatization of airport management and control. In addition, a Low-Cost Airline Committee has also been established to study the feasibility of setting up a low-cost airline at Brunei Airport.
