(Singapore, 28th) A 61-year-old ethnic Chinese man in Singapore is suspected of sending a pork package to a mosque and was charged in court yesterday.
According to a statement by the Singapore police on the 27th, Masjid Al-Istiqamah at Serangoon North Avenue 2 received a package at 5:20 pm on September 24th. After a female staff member opened the package, she experienced difficulty breathing and was sent to hospital.
The package was subsequently confirmed to contain pork. Police launched an investigation and arrested a man on September 25th.
In addition, according to Lianhe Zaobao, court charges allege that the accused intentionally sent a pork-containing package to Masjid Al-Istiqamah on September 24th, with a note on the package saying “Halal BaBi Chop.” The accused placed the package inside the mosque within the sight of a male individual.
The accused’s actions contravene Section 298 of the Penal Code, which prohibits acts or words intended to wound the religious or racial feelings of others. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison, a fine, or both.
