Urgent Government Action Called for Erosion of Miri Lutong Coastline by Alan Ling

(Miri, 13th) Addressing the increasingly severe erosion problem of Miri Lutong Beach, Sarawak DAP Secretary Alan Ling today called on the federal and state governments to take immediate action to prevent the situation from worsening further and endangering the safety of local residents.

Alan Ling stated that with the continuous erosion of the coastline, waves can now crash onto the road at any time, posing a serious threat to normal traffic. Road users must exercise extra caution while driving to prevent accidents.

Moreover, he pointed out that plans for this project have been heard of years ago, mainly involving the construction extending into the sea and a 3.5-kilometer-long breakwater and leisure park, including land reclamation, seawall construction, floodgate prevention measures, and shallow sea breakwater stones.

“However, there is no sign of any work being initiated. Residents living in the affected coastal areas now live in constant unease. The once-high-priced seaview houses have now fallen into distress due to environmental degradation, and the interests of nearby residents are severely harmed by geographical issues.”

He emphasized that if the issue is not addressed immediately, more severe disasters could occur in the future, endangering more lives and property. He urged the government to immediately undertake emergency protection projects, including building breakwaters and reinforcing the coast to prevent further erosion.

Alan Ling, who is also a member of the National Sports Council, stated that he understands the government has plans in place, but the public's request is for immediate action as the coastal erosion issue has reached a critical stage that needs urgent attention.

“Currently, there are not even warning signs set up in the area to alert passersby and road users, showing the authorities' indifferent attitude, which has disgruntled local residents who often express their concerns to him.”

“We cannot wait for a disaster to occur before we regret it. The government has a responsibility to ensure the safety and quality of life for the people and must take immediate action!”

Meanwhile, Alan Ling stated that the Sarawak DAP will continue to pay attention to this issue and maintain communication with relevant units to follow up on the progress of the situation.
