University Student Swept Away by Current While Saving Another: Drowning Female Classmate Rescued

(Kedah, 13th) A university student showed courage by saving a female classmate who appeared to be drowning, but unfortunately lost his own life while the girl was successfully rescued.
This incident occurred yesterday (the 12th) at around 11 a.m. at the Bukit Tingting Waterfall in the Jerai Mountains, Kedah.
The deceased was 24-year-old Muhammad Zaim Ikhwan Mohamad Faz, from Sungai Dedap, Yan District, and a student of Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah International Islamic University (UniSHAMs).
Kuala Muda District Police Chief, Assistant Superintendent Hayan, stated that the police received a report about the drowning at 11:47 a.m.
"According to a preliminary investigation, seven hikers (including four men and three women) set off from Kampung Sungai Kunyit at about 9:30 a.m. that day to climb Mount Jerai. Upon arriving at the Bukit Tingting Waterfall checkpoint, one of the female participants appeared to be drowning and cried out for help."

He said that the deceased and a group leader immediately jumped into the water to attempt a rescue, but the deceased was swept away by the current during the rescue. His friends on site immediately called the MERS999 emergency hotline for help.

“Firefighters found the deceased’s body near the waterfall at 2:30 p.m. and later sent it to the Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital mortuary for autopsy.”
It is understood that the female student who fell into the water and another person who tried to rescue her were eventually saved.
