PLA troops stationed in Beijing participated in a volunteer tree planting event this week in Haidian District of Beijing. Yin Li, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Secretary of the Beijing Municipal Party Committee, together with Zhang Shengmin, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission, took part in the activity.

This marks the 44th consecutive year that leaders of the Central Military Commission have participated in the capital's volunteer tree planting event. On April 2 last year, then-Politburo member and Central Military Commission Vice Chairman Zhang Youxia, along with Yin Li, participated in a volunteer tree planting event at a greening site in Tongzhou District, Beijing; after Zhang Youxia was officially announced to have been dismissed on January 24 of this year, Zhang Shengmin is now the only remaining Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission.

According to Xinhua News Agency, this year’s tree planting site is located within the soon-to-be-built Tundian Countryside Park in Haidian District. Last Thursday morning (April 2) at around 9 a.m., Yin Li and Zhang Shengmin arrived at the planting spot, and together with military and local leaders as well as troops, they wielded shovels, piled up soil, built embankments, and watered the seedlings. After more than an hour of labor, they jointly planted over 1,000 saplings including Chinese white pine, Beijing peony, small-leaf boxwood, oil pine, and ash.

According to reports, PLA units across the country have thoroughly implemented Xi Jinping's concept of ecological civilization, participating in volunteer tree planting activities and supporting key local ecological projects. Since the national movement of volunteer tree planting was launched, the military has contributed over 65.1 million person-times, planted more than 783 million trees, and protected 13 million mu (about 2.14 million acres) of forest and grassland resources.

The PLA troops stationed in Beijing have participated in greening over 200 key areas in the capital, as well as in afforestation efforts for more than 60 large public parks and over 300 recreational forest areas, contributing to the building of a garden city and a beautiful China.

Leaders from various departments of the Central Military Commission, relevant units stationed in Beijing, and Beijing municipal leaders also participated in the tree planting event last Thursday.
