K-pop superstar GD (G-Dragon, Kwon Ji-yong) recently performed on stage in Macau, but the outfit he wore that day featured wording considered racially discriminatory, resulting in criticism from overseas fans and netizens. As the controversy escalated, his management company “Galaxy Corporation” issued an official apology.
On the 2nd, GD appeared on stage in Macau, sporting a long inner layer paired with a short outer jacket, catching eyes as usual with his look. However, the public quickly noticed that his innerwear was printed with the Dutch phrase “RONNY, EEN GEILE NEGER__JONGEN.” Among this, “EEN GEILE” carries the meaning of “sexually aroused person,” and depending on context, may be considered inappropriate.
Even more controversial was the word “NEGER,” which, in Dutch, originally referred to black people, but is now widely regarded as bearing racial discrimination and offensive connotations, and is generally avoided in both formal and daily use. Because GD wore clothing bearing this wording on an international stage, he was questioned for lacking cultural sensitivity.
In response, “Galaxy Corporation” issued an official statement on the 4th, saying: “We sincerely apologize for the artist’s stage outfit featuring inappropriate wording in a social and cultural context.” The company further emphasized that through this incident, it has once again realized the importance of more nuanced cultural sensitivity and responsible inspection. It promised to strictly review and improve its internal checking and confirmation process—including costumes—and operate under more prudent standards in the future. The statement concluded with another apology: “We sincerely apologize once more for the disappointment and concern caused by this incident.”
