The spokesperson for the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade expressed on the 2nd that the US, citing issues such as fentanyl, has imposed a 10% tariff on Chinese products exported to the US. The Chinese business community deeply regrets and firmly opposes this action.
The spokesperson stated that the US's unilateral tariff imposition seriously violates WTO rules, causing a large number of American businesses and consumers to pay the price, disrupting normal Sino-US economic and trade cooperation, and impacting the stability of the global industrial and supply chains. In trade wars and tariff wars, there are no winners. The US's mistaken actions do not help solve its own problems, are not beneficial for Sino-US bilateral relations, and hinder global economic development.
EU: Hurts All Parties
Additionally, the European Union criticized on the 2nd the US's decision to impose import tariffs on major trading partners, stating this action "hurts all parties" and indicated that it will respond "firmly" if President Trump follows through on his promise to impose tariffs on EU imports.
A spokesperson for the European Commission said, “The European Union regrets the US's decision to impose tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China.”
US President Trump said he is “certain” to impose new tariffs on the EU and reiterated his dissatisfaction with the US-EU trade deficit and the EU's insufficient importation of American cars and agricultural products.
On the 2nd, Trump said, “I'm not going to say there’s a definite timetable, but this will happen soon.”
