Reluctant to Remove Mask When Boarding: Jennie’s Attitude Sparks Controversy

Published at Mar 25, 2026 05:37 pm
Jennie, a member of the Korean girl group BLACKPINK, was recently invited to perform in Hong Kong, attracting a large crowd of fans. However, as she was leaving Hong Kong and appeared at the airport preparing to return to Korea, her attitude during her interaction with ground staff at the boarding gate stirred discussion. After related videos surfaced, the incident quickly spread on social media, with some netizens criticizing her poor impression.

From the leaked footage, Jennie appeared at Hong Kong airport that day in a low-key all-black outfit. She wore a black knit beanie and a hooded jacket, paired with black sunglasses and a white mask, almost completely covering her face and revealing only part of her facial features. Her overall look had a casual style and gave off a strong “fully-armored” sense of protection, seemingly wishing to keep a low profile and avoid excessive attention at the airport.

However, at the boarding gate, when ground staff requested, in accordance with regulations, that she temporarily remove her sunglasses and mask to verify her identity, she first slowly pulled down her mask and removed her sunglasses. But her expression appeared somewhat reluctant, and she kept her head down almost the entire time. After the staff finished checking and returned her passport, she seemed to leave directly without nodding or acknowledging them, making her overall attitude appear a bit cold, which sparked debate online.

Many netizens criticized her, believing that even public figures should respect staff. “Am I the only one who feels bad for the ground staff? They just went to work and had to suffer for no reason. If she acts like this in front of cameras, it’s hard to imagine how she treats people around her in private,” “If she doesn’t want to cooperate, she should take a private jet,” “Ground staff are not fangirls; they don’t need to put up with this attitude,” “Everyone going through customs has to remove their mask, why should she only pull it down halfway?” However, some fans defended her: “She probably hasn’t woken up yet,” “She just performed and is really tired,” “You shouldn’t judge her for acting high and mighty based on just a few seconds of footage,” calling on the public not to overinterpret the event.
