WeChat: Users Must Actively Declare AI-Generated Content

(China, 1st) Chinese social media giant WeChat has announced that when users publish AI-generated content of any kind, they must proactively declare it as AI-generated; at the same time, WeChat will label AI content and provide warnings for content suspected to be AI-generated.
AI-generated content online in China has repeatedly caused controversy. In mid-August, several Douyin users used AI technology to impersonate the voices of China’s well-known diving athlete Quan Hongchan, as well as table tennis players Sun Yingsha and Wang Chuqin, claiming to be selling free-range eggs from Quan Hongchan’s family. Because the voices were highly convincing and these three individuals are widely recognized, nearly 50,000 packs of eggs were sold before it was discovered to be AI-generated content, with none of the three being aware of it.
The WeChat Coral Security official account, responsible for content safety management, announced on the 31st in the “Announcement on Further Regulating the Labeling of AI-Generated Synthesized Content” that the above measures were being implemented. It emphasized that this move is intended to further optimize AI content identification capabilities and safeguard the transparency and credibility of user information.
The notice stated that for AI-generated and synthesized content, WeChat will add explicit or implicit labels; at the same time, corresponding prompts will be provided for content that may be AI-generated or synthesized so that users can clearly identify it.
The announcement added that to avoid confusion or misunderstanding during the dissemination of content on WeChat, users must proactively declare if the content they are publishing is AI-generated or synthesized.
