(Brunei, 25th) — One of the highlights at yesterday's Sultan with the People celebration held in Temburong was the local Murut ethnic exhibition, showcasing traditional food, longhouses, and a ceremonial arch used to welcome distinguished guests.
The President of the Brunei Lembawang Murut Association, retired Lieutenant Colonel Tamin, expressed that they are honored to participate in this event and to be part of His Majesty’s 79th birthday celebration.
He said, this year they built an arch using firewood. This special arch is traditionally used in household celebrations such as weddings to welcome important guests. They also perform the traditional Ukoih dance to celebrate significant occasions.
He added that they displayed traditional Murut items and performed the traditional gulingtangan. They also presented His Majesty with souvenir gifts featuring Murut traditional items.
He admitted that due to rapid changes in the times, there are concerns about the disappearance of Murut traditions.
He said that through events like today’s, they can showcase traditional Murut items and strengthen young people's recognition of Murut cultural heritage.
This year’s exhibition also included blowpipe demonstrations and performances. He said association members feel very proud and moved to once again have the opportunity to participate in this year’s event held in Temburong District, and to send birthday wishes to His Majesty.
He stated that the association currently has 39 members and was established on September 13, 2023, aiming to raise awareness about the tradition of blowpipes and to pass on this tradition, which is a part of Murut life.
