(Indonesia, 3rd) — A ferry sank near Indonesia's popular tourist island of Bali, with four people rescued and at least 61 missing.
This ferry sank at around 11:20pm local time on Wednesday (July 2). Citing a statement released by the Surabaya Search and Rescue Agency on Thursday, AFP reported: "According to passenger data, the total number of people on board the ferry was 53, plus 12 crew members… The vessel also carried 22 vehicles, including 14 trucks." The agency later released a statement saying four people had been rescued in the early hours of Thursday.
Indonesia has about 17,000 islands, and maritime accidents are frequent, partly due to lax safety standards. In March this year, a boat carrying 16 people capsized in waters near Bali, resulting in the death of an Australian woman and at least one person injured. In 2018, a ferry sank in one of the world's deepest lakes on Sumatra Island, causing more than 150 drownings.
