KUCHING,16 May: Commercial crime in the district has shown an upward trend, with police recording 1,027 reports and opening 242 investigation papers in the first quarter of 2025.

Kuching Police Chief, ACP Naga Chabu, said the figure recorded from January 1 to April 30, showed an increase of 134 cases or 55 per cent compared to the same period last year.

“As for the estimated losses, it jumped by RM3,011,435, representing a 27 per cent rise compared to last year,” he said during the district police headquarters (IPD) monthly assembly on Thursday.

While commercial crime rose, other categories saw improvement.

Index crimes involving property fell by 192 cases or 44.04 per cent, and violent crimes dropped slightly by two cases or 5.26 per cent.

On narcotics, police have opened 784 investigation papers and arrested 842 individuals over various drug offences this year.

In light of this, Alexson urged all departments under Kuching IPD to intensify enforcement to reduce the index crime rate, particularly in drug-related cases and conduct more public awareness on cybercrimes.
On another note, he stressed the importance of discipline among police personnel and directed the Kuching Integrity and Standard Compliance Division (BIPS) to step up monitoring to ensure strict adherence to orders and regulations.

“Looking at social media nowadays, we are facing various integrity issues – being involved in crimes, corruption, misconduct and others,” he said.

“Hence, these must be addressed seriously and close monitoring through firm and effective supervision is crucial to minimise space and opportunity for misconduct, and restore public confidence in the police force.”
