The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) released its latest report on the 11th, stating that by the end of 2025, the number of people forcibly displaced worldwide will exceed 117 million. Although this marks the first decline in decades, the figure remains unacceptable.
According to Xinhua News Agency, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi issued the agency's flagship report, "Global Trends Report," that day. The report shows that by the end of 2025, the number of people forcibly displaced within their own countries will reach 68.7 million, while the number of refugees forced to flee their countries will reach 41.6 million.
The report also shows that the number of refugees globally in 2025 has decreased by 3% compared to the end of 2024, mainly due to significant increases in refugee returns in Afghanistan, Syria, and Sudan, and reductions in the internally displaced populations within the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Syria. However, the report points out that many people returned without guarantees, and conditions for reintegration into society remain extremely challenging.
Grandi stated that resolving just a few major conflicts in the world would allow millions of refugees to return home safely and with dignity.
2026 marks the 75th anniversary of the "Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees." The convention was adopted on July 28, 1951, and officially came into force on April 22, 1954.
