(Kuching, 11th) — A 28-year-old unemployed woman was sentenced to one month in jail by the Magistrate’s Court for stealing two handbags at a shopping mall.
The accused, Nur (28), pleaded guilty this morning before Assistant Registrar of the Magistrate’s Court, Abdurrahman Abrar Jarni, to the charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code (theft in a building).
According to the charge, she stole two handbags from a store in a well-known shopping mall in Kuching at about 7:20pm on November 6.
Under this section, those convicted may be sentenced to up to 10 years in prison and may also be fined.
Case details state that, at the time of the incident, a store employee witnessed the accused take something from the toys section and hide it under her clothes. The employee then reviewed CCTV footage and discovered the accused hiding a pink handbag inside her clothing.
The employee immediately intercepted the accused at the back door, and upon inspection, found that she had hidden two handbags. After receiving a report, police investigated and confirmed the two handbags, valued at RM81.80 in total, were stolen by the accused without payment.
The case was prosecuted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Fauzulutfi Suriani, while the accused was unrepresented by a lawyer.
