After the explosion, New Delhi, Mumbai, and other cities announced a state of high alert, with local police strengthening security forces in key areas.

Indian Prime Minister Modi expressed condolences to the families of the victims, and revealed that he had "reviewed the situation" with Home Minister Amit Shah and other officials.

New Delhi Police Commissioner Goelcha stated that the explosion occurred shortly before 7 p.m. local time.

He said: "A slow-moving vehicle stopped at a red light. An explosion occurred inside the car, causing damage to nearby vehicles as well."

The New Delhi police said the cause of the explosion is still under investigation, and the nature of the blast remains unclear.

According to India's New Delhi Television (NDTV), after the explosion, a car owner named Salman was arrested.
