Caught Up in Lawsuit Over Unpaid Management Fees, Sonia Sui Fights Back: Paid Out-of-Pocket to Fix Leaks

Taiwanese actress Sonia Sui and her family of five moved into a luxury apartment in Taipei's Dazhi area in 2022. On the 22nd, it was reported that the community management committee filed a payment order with the court in July as a creditor, requesting Sui to pay off overdue management fees totaling 110,000 NTD (about 15,000 MYR). In response, Sui stated that the management committee had neglected the maintenance and repair of the building. Her home, located on the top floor, suffered water damage from leaks for three years. Despite repeated reports to the committee, she said her concerns were brushed off and ignored, leaving her with no choice but to pay nearly 500,000 NTD (about 69,000 MYR) out of her own pocket for repairs. She took the legal and practical approach of offsetting the repair costs against the management fees—as a form of passive protest.
Sui also pointed out that she had sent multiple letters to the management committee and kept all correspondence records. She hoped the committee would not twist the facts to deceive the public or damage her reputation: "The reason I'm saying this is because one of the committee members called my legal counsel to discuss the matter in a rather aggressive tone, claiming they would use the media to damage my reputation. We immediately refuted this and informed him of the legal repercussions, at which point he backtracked and claimed he was only joking. Therefore, I ask the management committee to stop using any means to evade compensation responsibilities or prevent us from seeking legal recourse." She added that many other top-floor residents have suffered as well, and the committee still owes them significant compensation. The management fees she legally offset are just a drop in the bucket.
