On the 25th, the Supreme Court of the Philippines announced that the current impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara would be terminated as the proceedings are unconstitutional.
In a statement, the Supreme Court said that all justices ruled that the Senate, which was handling the case, did not have jurisdiction over the impeachment and could not initiate the proceedings.
On February 5 this year, Sara was impeached by the House of Representatives. The impeachment case was then forwarded to the Senate for trial.
The statement said that before the formal impeachment of Sara, the House had received three impeachment complaints within a year. Since the House did not act on the first three complaints, the Supreme Court regarded these as "terminated or dismissed".
On this basis, the Philippine Supreme Court determined that the impeachment case violated the constitutional provision stating that “no more than one impeachment proceeding shall be initiated against the same official within a year.”
The court indicated that any subsequent impeachment complaint against Sara can only be filed from February 6, 2026 onward. Sara is the daughter of former Philippine President Duterte.
