Japan to Release Oil Reserves Equivalent to 20 Days of Consumption Again in May

Published at Apr 10, 2026 12:12 pm
According to Japanese media reports, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated on Friday that a second round of oil reserve releases will begin in early May, releasing reserves sufficient to meet Japan's domestic oil demand for 20 days.

Sanae Takaichi said that the oil reserves released from early May would be enough to meet domestic demand for 20 days.

About 95% of Japan's oil supply depends on the Middle East. Since March 16, Japan has started coordinating with other countries and independently releasing oil reserves.

Currently, the total amount of oil reserves Japan has released is equivalent to 50 days' worth of consumption.

As of April 6, Japan's oil reserves are sufficient to last for 230 days of consumption.
