Thai police said on the 8th that a suspect in the shooting of former Cambodian opposition party member Lin Jinya (phonetic translation) in Bangkok has been arrested in Cambodia.
According to foreign media reports, Lin Jinya was shot and killed by a motorcycle-riding gunman near the bustling Khao San Road in Bangkok after arriving in Thailand from Cambodia on the 7th by bus.
A Thai court issued an arrest warrant for the 41-year-old motorcyclist on Wednesday. Three police officers told foreign media that he is a former marine corps member.
Thai Police Chief Sayyah told foreign media that upon learning the suspect had crossed the border, Thai police coordinated with Cambodian authorities. "The Cambodian police have arrested him," he said. Thailand will request the extradition of the suspect.
Previously, the regional police director said that according to CCTV footage, the suspect, a Thai national, had fled across the border. He said the man was last seen in Sa Kaeo, a province bordering Cambodia.
The Thai government has pledged a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the case. Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Nikonde said: "The Thai authorities are highly concerned about this case and note the clear public safety issues."
Lin Jinya was a member of the now-dissolved Cambodia National Rescue Party. Dozens of opposition politicians and legislators, including Lin Jinya, have been banned from engaging in political activities after the party was dissolved.
Lin Jinya was not an important member of the opposition, both the police and Thai government said they still need to determine his murder motive.
A government spokesman said: "We will conduct an investigation to determine whether the murder motive was due to personal purposes or other reasons."
