The Thai police have reminded businesses nationwide that the sale of alcoholic beverages will be prohibited for 48 hours during Asalha Bucha Day and Buddhist Lent Day. Violators face up to 6 months in prison, a maximum fine of 10,000 baht (approximately 1,220 ringgit), or both.
According to Thai media outlet ‘khaosod’, the Royal Thai Police issued this reminder on Monday, as authorities are preparing for the upcoming long holiday. This holiday includes the King’s birthday on July 28, Asalha Bucha Day on July 29, and Buddhist Lent Day on July 30.
National Police spokesperson Lieutenant General Trairong Phiwphan stated that Police Chief General Kitrat Phanphet has instructed all police units across the country to strengthen crime prevention measures and road safety operations during the long holiday.
According to the ban, from 0:01 am on July 29 to midnight on July 30, all wholesale and retail sales of alcoholic beverages will be strictly prohibited.
This restriction applies to convenience stores, supermarkets, restaurants selling alcohol, entertainment venues, and other retailers, except for places explicitly exempted by law.
The exempted locations include:
- International airport passenger terminals serving international flights.
- Entertainment venues operating under the Thai Entertainment Venue Act and holding valid licenses.
- Entertainment venues located within designated tourist areas approved by the Ministry of Public Health.
- Hotels licensed under the Hotel Act.
- Venues hosting major national or international events designated by the Ministry of Public Health.
The police warn that anyone found violating the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act will face a maximum penalty of six months imprisonment, a fine of up to 10,000 baht, or both.
Authorities also stated that the police have coordinated crime prevention and traffic safety plans to reduce traffic accidents during the long holiday.
