At Least 24 Dead in Texas Floods, Over 20 Summer Camp Children Missing

Severe floods caused by overnight heavy rain swept through central Texas, leaving at least 24 people dead. Along the rapidly rising Guadalupe River, more than 20 children participating in summer camp activities remain missing.

Kerr County Sheriff Leitha, in a press conference, said that more deaths are expected to be reported in the county.

Lieutenant Governor Patrick stated that at a girls-only summer camp called "Mystery Camp" in Kerr County, around 23 children have been missing from the early morning until the afternoon of the 4th. The camp had about 750 children present when the flood struck.

He said that Texas has deployed nine water rescue teams, at least 14 helicopters, and over 500 rescue personnel to search near the camp, rescuing multiple adults and children who were trapped in trees.

Videos circulating online show the Guadalupe River surging, with raging waters sweeping away vehicles, submerging houses, and some riverside towns suffering extensive power outages as floodwaters reached knee-depth on streets.

The U.S. National Weather Service noted that in the early hours of the 4th, the Guadalupe River’s water level rose about 6.7 meters within three hours, approaching the historical record. The water level gauge soon became unusable due to flooding. With continuing rainfall, water levels in some river sections are expected to keep rising. Around 4 a.m., the Weather Service sent emergency alerts to the mobile phones of residents along the river and camp personnel.
