South Korean Actor Yoo Ah-in (real name Uhm Hong-sik) was accused of using the "milk injection" (Propofol) and consuming marijuana, among at least 7 types of drugs, thereby violating multiple laws. In the first trial, he was sentenced to one year in prison and detained in court. However, on the 18th, the second trial sentenced him to one year in prison with a two-year suspended sentence, a fine of 2 million KRW (approximately 6170 MYR), and he was even released in court, shocking the entire nation of Korea.
The Fifth Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court stated that Yoo Ah-in deeply reflected on his actions during the more than five months of detention and promised not to reoffend. Moreover, Yoo Ah-in had no similar previous offenses, so the court deemed the initial sentence too heavy, thus changing it to a suspended sentence and releasing him in court. Yet, the court also emphasized that Yoo Ah-in exploited loopholes in the system to illegally obtain medical drugs under someone else's name, which was reprehensible behavior.
The news of Yoo Ah-in's release in court caused an uproar in Korea, with the online community expressing their fury, leaving comments such as: "After taking so many drugs, the result is a suspended sentence, haha," "South Korea is truly a garbage country," "Have they gone mad," "Does he have powerful backing?"
