(Thailand, 6th) On the afternoon of the 5th, Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation issued an emergency disaster alert for 33 provinces in the northern, northeastern, central, and southern regions, warning that flash floods, forest runoff, landslides, and rising river water levels may occur in the near future.
According to China News Service, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation urged governments and people in high-risk areas to closely monitor local rainfall and river water levels, especially in areas where rainfall exceeds 90 millimeters within 24 hours. All provinces are called on to take coordinated response measures, emphasizing the establishment of early warning systems in communities, reinforcement of flood barriers, and removal of blockages in waterways to ensure effective water management from upstream to downstream.
Department Director Phasakon Wonyara pointed out that these 33 provinces may experience heavy rainfall soon. According to assessments, the provinces at higher risk of flash floods, landslides, and flooding include Chiang Rai, Phayao, Nan, and Tak in the north; Loei, Nong Khai, Mukdahan, Udon Thani, Sakon Nakhon, Nakhon Phanom, Yasothon, and Ubon Ratchathani in the northeast; Chonburi, Rayong, Chanthaburi, and Trat in the central and eastern regions; and Surat Thani, Ranong, Phang Nga, and Phuket in the south.
The department has instructed all provinces to expedite reservoir inspections and release excess water when necessary. Some reservoirs, especially those located in Sakon Nakhon, Kalasin, and Trat provinces, have currently reached more than 80% capacity and require urgent drainage to prevent overflow. The department is also monitoring rising water levels in low-lying areas and along major river systems such as the Ing River in Chiang Rai and the Sai River, where flooding could occur.
The department said that if risks are detected at natural tourist attractions such as waterfalls and caves, they may be temporarily closed. Emergency response teams and heavy machinery are already being mobilized to ensure rapid deployment in case of disaster.
