Brunei Sultan: ASEAN Must Firmly Address Tensions and Trade Disputes

(Bandar Seri Begawan, 27th) His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei attended the 47th ASEAN Summit plenary session held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, accompanied by his son Prince Mateen.
The handover ceremony of the Second Protocol to Amend the ASEAN Trade in Goods Agreement was held during the 47th ASEAN Summit plenary session.
In his speech at the plenary, His Majesty the Sultan congratulated Timor-Leste on becoming the 11th member state of ASEAN, stating that this will strengthen the region’s efforts to realize the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
At the same time, His Majesty stated that ASEAN must continue to firmly address geopolitical tensions and trade fragmentation, as these directly affect trade, investment, and the livelihoods of ASEAN’s peoples.
"We must strengthen intra-ASEAN trade to ensure member states can conduct broader trade and deepen economic cooperation, thereby bringing the region closer to shared prosperity."
At the conclusion of his speech, His Majesty congratulated Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar for successfully serving as the ASEAN rotating chair, and expressed Brunei’s full support for President Marcos Jr. of the Philippines and the Philippine government in assuming the ASEAN rotating chairmanship next year.
The summit focused on discussing trade and investment, energy, connectivity, multilateralism, and the commitment to work with trusted partners to jointly promote regional peace, growth, and stability.
Three documents were signed at the summit. ASEAN leaders approved and took note of 16 documents, including the Chairman’s Statement of the 47th ASEAN Summit.
