(15th, Bandar Seri Begawan) A solid family system is crucial for achieving Brunei's 2035 Vision, especially its second goal of high-quality living.
"Empowering caring, strong, and resilient families" has been identified as the second vision of the social blueprint, emphasizing the importance of the family system as one of the key pillars in building a prosperous society.
The Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, Dato Nazmi, highlighted the importance of a solid family system in a statement on International Family Day.
Therefore, the minister stated, we must strive to strengthen the family system, ensuring that family well-being is always a core element of the nation's sustainable development plan. This will also aid us in building a highly resilient Brunei society to meet future challenges.
"Every family inevitably faces increasingly complex and challenging realities of life, such as social issues and economic pressures. Within families, everyone can find support and experience every joyful and challenging moment together with their loved ones. The family system is one of the main foundations for shaping individual identity, values, and self-awareness."
International Family Day, celebrated every year on May 15th, is a global initiative recognized by the United Nations to emphasize the important role of the family system in a country's social, economic, and cultural development. Thus, Brunei also celebrates International Family Day annually to show support and commitment to the importance of the family system.
The theme for International Family Day 2025 is "Family-Oriented Sustainable Development Policies: Towards the Second World Summit on Social Development Issues in 2025."
The minister also emphasized the significance of our National Family Day (HKK). He expressed gratitude, stating that all parties in Brunei have been and will continue actively engaging in various activities to raise awareness of the importance of family happiness.
One significant initiative is the National Family Day (HKK), held every first Sunday of May since 2012. This year's celebration took place on May 4th, with the theme "My Family, My Hope," focusing on "instilling the core values of Brunei families: love, responsibility, respect, and care."
In 2024, we witnessed various activities organized at national, regional, district (village), village group, association, and community levels, in conjunction with National Family Day, providing opportunities to strengthen family bonds.
Events held include the "Family Harmony Leisure Day" in collaboration with Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam, the Brunei Development Challenge organized by the Malay Ali Women's Committee, the National Family Day Carnival hosted by the Tutong Women's Committee, the "Empowering Family Institutions Forum," the 2024 National Family Day, and the "Big Kem Family Run" organized by The Big Kem Project.
The minister hopes that all parties, whether government agencies, private sectors, associations, institutions, village chiefs and leaders, as well as grassroots leaders, will continue to make commitments and engage in national cooperation, particularly to ensure the success of National Family Day celebrations.
The minister announced that this year will see the launch of the "Family System Action Plan (2025-2029)." The plan will focus on strategies and programs implemented in an inclusive manner to cultivate a family-oriented culture, with more targeted interventions tailored to the living conditions of families (including vulnerable groups), improving sustainable and effective social security support, and introducing the concept of family resilience.
The minister noted that the family system "is an important foundation for social and economic development and a primary support system for individuals. The core family values of Brunei are the foundation for building a prosperous society. Let us all 'love, be responsible, respect, and care' for every member of our families."
The minister concluded by expressing that with continuous efforts and cooperation from all parties, let us pray to Almighty Allah for the nation to continue progressing in a peaceful and prosperous environment, in the harmonious unity of the monarch, nation, people, and religion, under the protection of Almighty Allah, to become a happy family nation.
