Final Appearance Revealed: Once Flaunted Chinese ID, Qian Baihui Regrets Not Seeing Hometown Return to the Motherland

Former iconic singer Qian Baihui (real name Zhong Lanxin) rose to fame with songs like “Missing You,” “Walking Past the Coffee House,” and “Mist and Rain.” On the 19th, she suddenly passed away due to a sudden illness at the age of 62.

She was born in Jianshi Township, Hsinchu County, Taiwan, of Atayal descent. In the 1990s, she moved to Beijing, China. In 2021, she relocated to Chengdu and publicly showed her Chinese national ID, stating that she had had the card for more than 20 years. “From now on, you can’t bully me anymore,” she said. Last night, her son Gao Luwan posted the obituary via her Weibo, and afterward uploaded a video of her singing “The Girl from Alishan” (High Green Mountain) at the 60th anniversary National Day gala of the Chinese Communist Party, writing: “Mom often said this was the greatest honor of her life, and she cherished keeping this video. Mom’s only regret was not seeing her hometown return to the motherland! If Mom’s departure can bring her ‘family’ back, that would be her final mission!”

Qian Baihui was originally scheduled to perform at the “Spring Classics—Golden Songs Carnival” in Yangquan, Shanxi on the 24th. The event organizers released a promotional video on the 17th inviting everyone with “let’s not miss each other,” but just two days later, she unexpectedly passed away. Her funeral will be held on the 23rd in Beijing.

Qian Baihui was discovered and mentored by Liu Jiachang in the 1980s. When Liu passed away in December last year, she mourned: “Teacher was the one who led me into the music industry, produced two great albums for me, and always encouraged me to get back up whenever I felt down.” In 1991, she attended a special Asian Games program in Beijing and became involved in composer Gao Dalin and singer He Jing’s marriage. In 1992, she “secured” her position as Gao Dalin’s new wife and settled in Beijing after marrying him and obtaining citizenship of the People’s Republic of China. After her marriage, she faded away from the music industry, only making a comeback in 2003. In 2022, she disclosed on a program that she had been divorced for years.

Throughout her life, she repeatedly expressed her love for her motherland. Her son’s name, Gao Luwan, was chosen to imply “connecting the Mainland and Taiwan,” reflecting her hope for cross-strait unification. In 2021, she once again posted her Chinese ID, emphasizing, “No matter where I am, the motherland is always my strong support.” In her later years, she chose to settle in Chengdu. In 2022, she revealed that a clothing company in Hangzhou had been using her stage name for commercial purposes without her knowledge. She filed an intellectual property lawsuit: “We must believe in our motherland, believe in the law. They will always be our strong backing,” she said, but unfortunately, the lawsuit was not resolved before her passing.
