On the 13th, a truck in South Korea crashed into the sidewalk of a market in Bucheon City, Gyeonggi Province, resulting in 2 deaths and about 20 injuries, 11 of whom were seriously injured.
The accident occurred at around 10:55 a.m. local time. The market is located about 20 kilometers west of the capital, Seoul. The vehicle entered the market for about 100 meters before crashing into a shop and coming to a stop. The truck driver is a man in his 60s.
A vendor at the scene told the Chosun Ilbo: “There was a loud noise when the accident happened. I thought the whole building was about to collapse.”
Two women died of cardiac arrest, and the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Police said at a press conference that the truck driver was rescued after being trapped inside the vehicle and is in stable condition. Police conducted an alcohol test and found no evidence of drunk driving.
According to the driver’s statement to the police, the truck’s brakes failed. The police will hand the vehicle over to investigators to determine the cause of the accident.
