(United States, 23rd) The United States has imposed strict restrictions on the Iranian delegation attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, prohibiting them from entering wholesale stores and luxury goods stores.
The series of meetings for the 80th United Nations General Assembly will commence on Tuesday (September 23rd) local time in New York. According to Reuters, US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Pigott said in a statement that Secretary of State Rubio has ordered the Iranian delegation to be limited to official activities only between their hotel and the United Nations headquarters.
Pigott indicated that the US measures aim to exert maximum pressure on Iran's clerical leadership. Washington accuses Iranian authorities of indulging in extravagant overseas shopping while ordinary Iranians face poverty, decaying infrastructure, and shortages of water and electricity.
The US, its European allies, and Israel accuse Tehran of seeking nuclear weapons, which Iran continues to deny. After US military forces joined Israel in late June to attack Iran’s nuclear facilities, tensions between the US and Iran have continued to escalate, and Iran's clerical rulers have grown increasingly concerned that US President Trump intends to overthrow the Islamic Republic of Iran.
Trump has reinstated the 'maximum pressure' policy from his first presidential term, imposing more sanctions to drive Iran’s oil exports close to zero, crippling its already fragile economy.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry has not commented on the US State Department's restrictions.
The United Nations headquarters is located in Midtown Manhattan. Before these new restrictions, members of the Iranian delegation were permitted to travel between the UN headquarters, the Permanent Mission of Iran to the UN, the Iranian Ambassador’s Residence, and John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens, New York.
Pigott said that the safety of US citizens remains the government’s top priority, and the US will never allow the Iranian regime to use the UN General Assembly to advance a 'terrorist agenda,' or to enjoy privileges denied to Iranian citizens.
He stated: “These restrictions send a clear message: The United States firmly supports the Iranian people’s demands for accountability and a better future.”
