Fire Breaks Out on US Navy Ship Near Okinawa, 2 Sailors Injured

The US Navy amphibious assault ship USS New Orleans caught fire on the afternoon of the 20th in waters near the "White Beach" naval facility in Uruma City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, resulting in injuries to two sailors.

The US Navy's 7th Fleet stated in a statement that, after 12 hours of firefighting, the blaze was extinguished in the early hours of the 21st.

The statement read: "The cause of the fire is currently under investigation... The crew of the USS New Orleans will continue to remain on board."

The USS New Orleans was deployed to the Sasebo Naval Base in Japan six years ago, mainly carrying out missions such as transporting US Navy personnel stationed in Okinawa. The vessel is approximately 208 meters long, 32 meters wide, with a total tonnage of about 24,400 tons.

Japanese Self-Defense Forces ships participated in the firefighting, and the Japan Coast Guard also dispatched patrol vessels to the scene.
