(Kuching, 14th) The Sarawak Road Transport Department has identified several areas in Kuching city that have become 'hotspots' for illegal racing activities.

Norraizan Keli, director of the Sarawak Road Transport Department, stated that the transport bureau will team up with the Royal Malaysian Police force to enforce the law on popular illegal racing routes, to crack down on illegal racers who disregard the safety of other road users, and to stop the spread of illegal racing activities to other areas in Sarawak.

He disclosed this during a motorcycle enforcement operation conducted by the Road Transport Department on a road in Kuching city last night, when interviewed by reporters.

He pointed out that in the motorcycle enforcement operations that have been conducted by the Road Transport Department since the beginning of the year, a total of 19,388 traffic tickets have been issued to violators, most of whom were penalized for riding motorcycles without a license. From this year until November, 7,324 riders have been prosecuted for riding motorcycles without a license.

Therefore, he reminded motorcycle riders not to ride on the road without a license, as this poses a danger to themselves and other road users.

He said, the purpose of the motorcycle enforcement operation is to monitor the condition of motorcycles on the road and to apprehend violating riders to prevent accidents.

On the other hand, according to records from the Royal Malaysian Police, the number of fatal accidents in Sarawak increases every year. There were a total of 21,418 traffic accidents last year, including 378 fatal incidents. As of November this year, there have been 19,964 road traffic accidents with 327 fatalities.

The purpose of the motorcycle enforcement operation is to monitor the condition of motorcycles on the road and to apprehend violating riders.
