(Bandar Seri Begawan, 22nd) According to a press release issued by the Brunei Darussalam Central Bank (BDCB), the bank announced on Monday the issuance of new banknotes, which are planned to be in circulation in the first half of 2026.
The new banknotes will uniformly use the term “Brunei Dollar,” replacing the word “Ringgit.”
The new series will feature five denominations—1 Brunei Dollar, 5 Brunei Dollars, 10 Brunei Dollars, 100 Brunei Dollars, and 500 Brunei Dollars—marking a significant milestone in the history of Brunei currency.
The central bank stated the new notes will employ enhanced anti-counterfeiting technology, keeping pace with advancements in the global currency industry, aiming to maintain the integrity of Brunei’s currency and strengthen protection against counterfeiting.
The central bank said this initiative reflects BDCB’s commitment to ensuring national currency remains safe and reliable, especially as cash continues to play an important role in daily life, even as the nation advances towards a digital economy.
While introducing new elements, the new banknotes will retain their iconic design to highlight Brunei’s national identity and tradition. The portrait of His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei will continue to appear on the 1, 5, 10, and 100 dollar notes, while the 500 dollar note will feature a portrait of the late Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien.
A major change in the new notes is that all denominations will now uniformly use the term “Brunei Dollar,” replacing “Ringgit,” in accordance with the 2004 Currency Order. BDCB stated this move aims to increase public familiarity with “Brunei Dollar” and encourage unified use of the official terminology.
The new series will also introduce the “DOMINO™” feature to assist visually impaired individuals. This innovative technology entails embossed dots in the lower right corner of each note, with a unique arrangement for each denomination for easy identification.
The central bank emphasized that all existing banknotes will continue to be legal tender and will circulate alongside the new series.
